One of the best-loved events in the design industry calendar, Clerkenwell Design Week is a three-day annual festival gathering Clerkenwell’s long-established design community together.

  2. Clerkenwell Design Week 2014  is now in its fifth year and  32,300 visitors attended the annual festival over three days last month (20-22 May). Led by new Show Director William Knight, the event also marked the festival’s fifth edition, as well as the launch of its new show, Additions, taking over the Crypt on the Green at St James Church.

The name Clerkenwell comes from the Clerks’ Well in Farringdon Lane, where London parish clerks performed the famous Medieval Mystery Plays throughout the Middle Ages. Since the Industrial Revolution, the area has housed craft workshops, printers, clockmakers and jewellers. Traditional crafts, such as printing and bookbinding still flourish, as do graphic designers. In the last two decades, Clerkenwell’s unique variety of buildings have been transformed into central studio and workshop spaces, attracting an unprecedented concentration of architectural, design and creative practices.

This year’s Clerkenwell Design Week partnered with over 60 local showrooms – including high-end contract furniture, lighting, kitchen, bathroom and material manufacturers – to promote their latest design projects; from Arper and Vitra, to bulthaup Clerkenwell, Knoll, Desso Domus Tiles (above right) and Workstation (above left).

Set against the historic backdrop of Clerkenwell, the festival was centred upon four focused exhibitions – Design Factory, Platform, Detail and Additions, providing over 2,856 sq m of show space to design brands from more than 20 countries. Exhibiting brands ranged from festival veterans Foscarini, Artemide, Another Country, Ginger & Jagger and Pinch, to newcomers including Benchmark, Discipline, St Judes, Hend Krichen, Tori Murphy and Chisel & Mouse.

In addition to the exhibitions, Clerkenwell Design Week showcased an array of specially commissioned projects, street spectacles and pop-up workshops, as part of its CDW Presents and Fringe series; from the Jaguar UK and Foscarini show-stopping installation at Design Factory to the Smith pavilion by Studio Weave and Tile Mile by russ + henshaw  .
